Drugs are the plague of modern society. They have ruined countless millions of lives since the drug culture was popularized in the 1960s. Illicit drugs are a multibillion-dollar industry flooding the world market with everything from marijuana to heroin, cocaine and synthetic “designer drugs.”

But illegal drugs are not the only problem. Today, we live in a “brave new world” where a pill has become the answer to any problem — depression, anxiety or simply a child’s inability to sit still in a classroom.

Drug use is often only a symptom of a larger spiritual problem in life which the individual is unable or unwilling to cope with. At the root of a drug problem one usually finds shattered relationships, personal tragedy or physical and emotional pain. Addressed with Scientology, such problems are permanently resolved and with them goes the need or desire to take drugs at all. Thus all Scientologists lead drug-free lives.

The effects of taking drugs, however, can last long after one has stopped taking them, for chemical residuals lodge in body fat where they can continue to affect one not only physically but spiritually for many years. Residual drug deposits which have remained in the body have been known to cause lessened perception, tiredness, confused thinking and to create an artificial “drug personality,” which can cause a person to harbor hostilities and distress that affect all aspects of his life.

These and other such effects drugs can cause are directly counter to a person’s spiritual betterment. Realizing this biochemical factor had to be addressed before any lasting spiritual gain could be made, L. Ron Hubbard developed the Purification Rundown, a way for the individual to rid himself of toxic drug residuals and free himself of the harmful effects of drugs, repair the spiritual damage done as a result of past drug use and regain the joy of living.

Once free from the harmful effects of drugs, a person becomes certain of himself, unafraid to live life to the fullest and able to bring honesty and trust to relationships with others. Tens of thousands have benefited and following are the stories of but a few of these.
